Contest American Idol 7 - Girl's

Borrowed from the American Idol Website

It's the ladies' turn to wow us... Did they? Here's what I think

Kristy Lee Cook

Since she was the first one - it was obvious that she was nervous. I couldn't feel the song - seems like she couldn't give out the proper expression. I know she has a good voice but it didn't show much with the song.

Joanne Borgella

I love this song - but I didn't think it suited her. There were a lot of pitch problems (IMO) but hey - what do I know right?

Alaina Whitaker

This is what I'm talking about!! I can't believe she's just 16!! Her voice reminds me of Carrie Underwood's! (who's dating Chace Crawford aka Nate of Gossip Girl) I love love love this song! Soooooo cute! Nice job! I think of the first 3 - this is the best so far!!

Amanda Overmyer

Firstly - I like her - but her performance - I couldn't understand what she was saying!! It seemed like she was mumbling - maybe because I wasn't familiar with the song. But in fairness - she did make it sound like a rock song. I like the musky-ness of her voice - and she's different!

Amy Davis

It was a bad start and continued on.. A lot of pitch problems (IMO - again) But man, she does look really really good! I mean compared to the Top 24 announcement - she looked really haggard!

Brooke White

Her performance was too sweet for me. She needs to learn how to work the camera - she's pretty so she can romance the camera. I like her voice though - good thing - in the chorus - she was able to save the song! :)

Alexandrea Lushington

Great voice! I must say - I didn't see that coming, I really didn't!

Kady Maloy

She had a wonderful start - very good voice! I agree with Randy that she lost it midway. Wonderful voice though!

I think Simon is getting restless because so far - no one has performed to impress.

Asia'h Epperson

Loved her performance. I have no complaints! Love her voice - love the song. So far, one of the best.

Ramiele Malubay

I'm going to be biased on this one - since she's Pinay - i LOVED it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Such a great voice!! Loved everything about her performance! I have this theory - put a Pinoy/Pinay singer on the competition - for sure they'll go far.

Let's go Ramiele!! Confidence up!! Yehaaaaa!!

Syesha Mercado

Good perfomance I think it was a little better than Ramiele's but I still like Ramiele better! Hehehe...

Carly Smithson

I think she didn't do her best. It was just a so-so performance. Not the best - I think she might have sang below par. She was really good during the auditions. *Sad*

I get the feeling that this batch is kinda laid back or rather got too lax in performing. It seemed like it got into their heads that they're part of the Top 24 so they're slacking off. I think they're forgetting that they're fighting for the Top 6 positions (Girls and Boys).. Tsk.. Tsk.. It's crucial for them - they will need to do better next week! That is for those who won't get booted out! It's going to be 'bye, bye' for 2 guys and 2 girls!!

American Idol winner performs at Mullins

Former "American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood performed at the Mullins Center last night as part of her first headlining tour. She focused on most of the songs from her newest album, "Carnival Ride," along with some older fan favorites from 2005's "Some Hearts." The three years since her "American Idol" win have transformed the Oklahoma native into a completely different performer. Her stage presence has evolved, focusing more on pumping up the crowd than on showcasing her vocal talents.

Underwood started off shakily with the first track off her new CD, "Flat on the Floor." She rose out of the stage from underneath, which made for an exciting entrance, but the vocals through her first few songs were mediocre as she began her set. Following the first five songs, she changed into a floor-length blue dress and transitioned into Grammy award-winning song "Jesus Take the Wheel." The song was one of her earliest singles and the first of the night from her first album. The crowd instantly recognized the song, and Underwood let them sing the first chorus on their own.

The crowd's reaction to the song gave her an obvious confidence boost and energy for the middle of her performance. She followed "Jesus Take the Wheel" with powerful ballad "I Know You Won't." This song and the ones that followed finally showcased Underwood's true vocal abilities, creating a different stage presence than earlier in the show. She shifted to a series of more upbeat songs with "I Ain't In Checotah Anymore" and "Crazy Dreams."

Towards the end of the show, Underwood seemed to lose momentum a bit. "All-American Girl" was well-received, but she seemed to have lost some of her energy by the time she got to "So Small," one of her newer songs. Underwood's encore started with a ballad and moved on to an unlikely choice, a Guns 'N Roses cover. As more of a ballad performer, '80s metal is not where her strengths lie. It wasn't her best song vocally, but gave her band a chance to have fun and do something different onstage. She ended her set with her latest and most successful hit, "Before He Cheats." This was a definite crowd favorite.

Although Underwood's catchier songs carry her albums, her ballads were where her voice really shone in a live performance. She seemed most comfortable with the slower songs, during which she gave herself a chance to belt out the strong notes and showcase her talent. Josh Turner opened for Underwood with a simple set that featured his deep, crooning voice. "Would You Go With Me" from his 2006 album "Your Man" was especially popular with the female portion of the Mullins Center crowd.

Rihanna wallpaper and biography

If nothing else, it has been an eventful and eye opening year for Barbados born songstress Rihanna. In addition to recording one of the most popular singles of 2005, the hypnotic "Pon De Replay" (which bass bumped out of more car windows while igniting a slew of barbeques last summer), she won over the masses with her charming Bajan persona.

"So much has happened in my life, I feel like I've grown five years in a year," she gushes. No doubt, by the time Def Jam Records released Rihanna's debut album Music of the Sun, it was obvious that this young woman was more than a one-hit wonder. With a work ethic reminiscent of Motown sisters back in the day when soul reigned supreme, Rihanna traveled throughout the world.

2005 saw Rihanna rocking the mic on tour with Gwen Stefani, making crowds sweat in Japan, posing for magazine covers in Los Angeles and shooting her first film role for Bring It On Yet Again. This was a long way from the quiet life she led in Barbados in the parish of St.Michael. Robyn Rihanna Fenty has come through her musical initiation process unscathed. And now she is poised for everything that 2006 may hold as she readies to do it again with her sophomore release A Girl Like Me.

"I grew up so much this past year. I had no choice. To pursue my dreams, and with their support, I left my entire family in Barbados to move to the States. It was a little scary to have no friends or family and all of a sudden step into a recording studio," recalled Rihanna.

"2005 taught me the dedication and responsibility it takes to make this dream a reality. Waking up at 5:00 am to start rehearsals, the training, the schoolwork, interviews, video shoots, going all day; it always seemed glamorous but it is real work. My love for music and singing will never change but the rose colored glasses are no longer so rosy."

"Many times over the past year, I didn't have anyone my age with me. When recording this album, I wanted it to seem like I was having a personal conversation with girls my age," says the eighteen-year-old singer. "People think, because we're young, we aren't complex, but that's not true. We deal with life and love and broken hearts in the same way a woman a few years older might. My goal on A Girl Like Me was to find songs that express the many things young women want to say, but might not know how."
Dropping from the harmonic heavens to the groovalistic dance floor, Rihanna has returned with another single that will have listeners begging the d.j. to play it one more time. Produced by Jason Rotem, the sizzling "S.O.S." is bringing the summer heat early this year. With its hypnotic beat and enticing melody, "S.O.S." utilizes the electro-funk of Soft Cell's '80s classic "Tainted Love" to create a soulful anthem of young love.
"I got excited when I first heard this track and three days later, it was recorded," Rihanna says. Turning heads with its rebel sound, "S.O.S." has been used as the theme song for their NIKE latest women's line, which can be viewed on NikeWomen.com. "Making that commercial was yet another new experience," she says. "It took six days to shoot, but working with choreographer Jamie King (Madonna and Shakira) was amazing."

Focusing on progressing as an artist, Rihanna has recorded a compelling track of heartbreak called "Unfaithful." Penned by her label-mate Ne-Yo and Stargate, the song documents the tragic decay of a relationship when another person starts cheating. Yet, in this instance, it is the girl who has strayed. "On a lot of records, men talk about cheating as though it's all a game. For me, 'Unfaithful' is not just about stepping out on your man, but the pain that it causes both parties."

Perhaps the most surprising track is the rock meets island vibe of "Kisses Don't Lie." Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, the principles of her production company, SRP, used a mixture of Caribbean elements, electric guitar and a mesmerizing bassline." Coming from Barbados, I really hadn't heard that much rock music," Rihanna confesses. "Touring with Gwen changed my perspective. So, when I was discussing this project with L.A. Reid, Chairman of Island Def Jam Records, I made sure to say I want to experiment with some rock."

During the recording of A Girl Like Me, Rihanna jet set down to Jamaica to record with Sean Paul on the yardie duet "Break It Off." Smiling, Rihanna explains, "I have so much respect and love for Sean Paul. He took me to visit the Bob Marley Museum before going into the studio, which was an amazing experience. When we finally got to the studio, I felt as though Marley's spirit was in the room with us." With A Girl Like Me, the beautiful singer proves that her breakthrough was no fluke. After selling 1 million copies worldwide of her debut Music Of The Sun, once again, the summer belongs to Rihanna.

American Idol men continue to struggle

This is the biggest week of the season for the "American Idol" semifinalists. A lot of times, there’s not a tremendous difference in future potential between the winner and some of the runners-up, but contestants eliminated in the semifinals are rarely heard from again.

Jennifer Hudson got enough exposure on the third season of “Idol” to land the “Dreamgirls” role that won her an Oscar. It’s doubtful that she would have even been called to audition had she not been a wild-card pick into the final 12. Taylor Hicks may have won last year, but Chris Daughtry will likely have the better career. Had either bowed out early, their lives might be very different today.

With all that on the line, the men shrank from the challenge instead of rising to the occasion. None of the eight performances were particularly memorable on a night when the opportunity to advance was there. This week, each contestant was asked to reveal something about themselves that might surprise people; not surprisingly, few said anything that implied an ability to perform under pressure.

Music Writing Is So Easy It Can Be Done Without Actually Hearing The Music In Question

If you've picked up the new issue of Maxim, you may have flipped past a review of the Black Crowes' forthcoming album Warpaint. In the 75 or so words allotted to him writer David Peisner spends half his time talking about the Crowes' 1990 debut album before passing his final judgment, writing off the record as being "boozy, competent, and in slavish tribute to the Stones, the Allmans, and the Faces." The graphical representation of Peisner's review: Two and a half filled circles out of five. Which wouldn't be so bad except for one thing:

Peisner never heard the album because the Black Crowes' label, Megaforce, didn't release advances of it to critics. Someone at the label got in touch with Maxim, and the person there in charge of editing the mag's music coverage said that the writeup, stars and all, was actually an "educated-guess preview" and hey, wasn't it better than no coverage at all?

Of course, we always prefer to hearing music, but sometimes there are big albums that we don't want to ignore that aren't available to hear, which is what happened with the Crowes. It's either an educated guess preview or no coverage at all, so in this case we chose the former.

Sigh. Of course, the Crowes are not happy about this little breach of record-reviewing ethics, and it's probably my cynicism about music, writing, and music writing--stripped-down wordcounts, the increasingly pain-in-the-assish process of procuring promos, and the ever-looming question "do these reviews even matter?"--that made me wonder if the only reason Maxim got caught in this case is that other general-interest publications' "not necessarily reviews of music" are generally chirpy in tone, and therefore not subject to irritated bands' and labels' press-release-writing wrath. If the review had been four or five filled-in circles, would the objections be so loud? I'm going to guess that they wouldn't.

Honestly, what troubles me more than anything is that the e-mail reprinted above is from someone who has the word "editor" in his/her job title. Think about that.

'American Idol' Recap: Atlanta Auditions Draw Beauty Queen, Homeless Teen

On Tuesday night's 900th seventh "American Idol" audition episode of the season, Ryan Seacrest brought the gang back to his hometown, Atlanta. There was talent, there were tears, there were Ryan's parents. (If Dennis Kucinich became a televangelist, he'd look exactly like Papa Seacrest.) And of course, there were awards to be given. Giddy-up...

The Scooter Girl Prize for Proof That We Shouldn't See More "Good" Singers in These Audition Episodes: Joshua Jones

For a couple of seasons, die-hard "Idol" fans (myself included) have been begging for less William Hung and more Paris Bennett in the audition episodes. But after seeing glass worker Josh Jones score a golden ticket, I think I speak for many when I say, "We were wrong." Aside from the fact that the dude had to sing with his back to the judges so as not to distract them with his crazy "demonic" eyes, his Queen audition sounded a tiny bit too Tiny Tim for my taste. Watching mediocrity get rewarded made me frustrated for the talented people who made it on the show, and angry about the talented people who didn't make it on the show.

The EJay Day "I Sat Near an Idol Once Too!" Plaque: J.P. Tjelmeland

Joshua "J.P." Tjelmeland talked about sitting next to Carrie Underwood at "Idol" auditions three years ago the same way I talk about once riding on an airport escalator behind Tyra Banks. That is, in a really pathetic and quasi-creepy manner. Desperation was added to the mix when his deranged theater-geek interpretation of a Rascal Flatts song left Joshua begging for a second chance: "I really, really, really want this. I don't wanna do four years of school!" Turns out this kid is a music major, in singing no less. He never mentioned where he's going to college, which is good because that school would distance itself from J.P. like an "Idol" runner-up dodges pesky Internet hookup rumors. Speaking of Broadway, J.P.'s audition ended with a silly montage devoted to Paula Abdul's indecision. But anyone with a basic knowledge of musical theater knows that Paula's showtune theme isn't "I Can't Say No." It's anything from the second act of "Grey Gardens."

The "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" 50 Kleenex Trophy: Asia'h Epperson

Of all the sad stories we've heard on "Idol," I think Asia'h's "my dad died in a car crash two days ago, right after I told him I was coming to audition" takes the proverbial cake. Her brave rendition of "How Do I Live" was absolutely gut-wrenching, but avoided any Jim Verraros cheap sympathy schmaltz by showcasing a fantastic set of pipes that should keep her around through Hollywood week. That being said, I couldn't help but notice that the silent "h" at the end of her first name kept making cameo appearances in her singing, as the husky-voiced 18-year-old added a "hhhh" sound to almost every other word.

The Least Desirable Pageant Crown: Brooke Helvie

Brooke Helvie spent most of her preliminary interview boasting about her pageant experience, but once she gave us bullet points from her résumé as Miss South Florida Fair, I was far less impressed: "I kissed a pig, and I milked a cow and got kicked by him, oh, well, I guess it would be a her. Ha." This got me thinking. I wonder if there are any tranny cows out there. But also, what the hell kind of backwoods pageant prize package is that? (Although, I suppose Miss USA has to kiss swine too.)

The "I Think Nigel Lythgoe Is Spying on Me" Award: Eva Miller

For as long as I can remember, my wife has been amusing me with a hilarious mock "Idol" audition in which she attempts to sing "A Thousand Miles," Vanessa Carlton's ode to being a White Chick. She shouts the lyrics as quickly as possible, she awkwardly moves her body back and forth, and nine times out of 10, she falls on her ass. Imagine our shock (and dismay) when Eva Miller waltzed onscreen Tuesday night and copped my wife's shtick for all of America to see. Seriously, you guys. I spent a good hour checking my apartment for bugs.

The "Oh Dear God, One Jordin Sparks Is More Than Enough, Thank You Very Much" Honorary Mention: Alexandrea Lushinton

Alexandrea had a big voice, a big smile and a big entourage. She's been performing since she was barely out of kindergarten. And, as Randy pointed out, she's only 16! That could only mean one thing: There's another Jordin among us. Alexandrea, or Miz Alex as the showbiz veteran normally goes by, has a leg up on Sparks, however. In addition to a MySpace page overflowing with music (which isn't half bad, by the way), Miz Alex has the ultimate secret weapon: an adorable great-grandmother. When the 93-year-old granny referred to TV production as "taking pictures," she officially replaced Ruby Dee as my favorite sassy old bitty.

Proof That Simon Cowell Would Make a Killer Eighth-Grade Teacher: Nathan Hite

After squeezing out a chorus of Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer," eighth-grade repeater Nathan Hite was none too happy with Simon's "bedroom audition" critique. And Simon was none too happy with Nathan's "too cool for school" attitude. "Do you want to listen or do you want to be a smart-ass?" Face! I have a feeling that if Nathan's teachers adopted the Cowell Curriculum of Discipline, the 16-year-old middle-schooler would become a much better learner. By the end of the awkward and angsty audition, it was no shock that "Idol" left this child behind.

The Sundance Head "Early Fan Favorite Most Likely To Deliver a Red-Faced and Sweaty Moody Blues Disaster During the Semi-Finals" Commemorative Bobblehead: Amanda Overmyer

The rock 'n' roll nurse (who rides a Harley, duh) is too good to be true. While Paula called her the "female Chris Daughtry," I'm thinking she's more like last season's Sundance Head, who won over America with his offbeat looks and quirky story but eventually sank in the semifinals. Until her early elimination comes to fruition, however, I have a feeling we'll be hearing a lot of Janis Joplin. (You think longtime "Idol" sponsor Ford will put the kibosh on Amanda singing "Mercedes Benz"?)

Most Likely to Get Mocked by Kurt Loder: Josiah Leming

Seacrest promised "an emotional end" to Tuesday night's episode, but after Asia'h's touching audition early on, what could top that? Enter Josiah, the baby-faced homeless kid who lives in his car. Honestly, I had a hard time feeling for a young guy who just decided to pick up and leave his family on a whim (maybe that's why I've avoided "Into the Wild" like the plague). Josiah talked a lot about "going where the wind blows," but later promised the judges "more ambition and more motivation" than any other 18-year-old. Really? This coming from a high school dropout who lives in a van down by the river? (Yet still somehow maintains a MySpace page? Hmmm ...)

Which isn't to say I wasn't rooting for him. I actually quite liked Josiah's quivering singing voice. I think Simon and Randy's criticisms about him crooning in a fake British accent are totally unfair considering they never said a thing to Blake Lewis during last year's never-ending Moz impression. And the little we heard of Josiah's original song, "To Run," whet my appetite for more whiney-but-in-a-good-way young-love anthems. Who knows? If other homeless-people-turned-singer-songwriters are any indication, Josiah is destined to become a VH1 staple, write a book of poetry that Kurt Loder will hate, and then inexplicably release a dance album. I wonder if he'll yodel during Hollywood week.

Did you agree with Simon when he said that pageant queen Brooke Helvie was the most annoying person ever? Did anyone else notice that Paula's hairdresser wasn't her best friend Daniel who is always, always, ALWAYS with her? And will these audition episodes ever end? [Ed. note: Actually, yes. Wednesday's "Hollywood or Bust" show is the last audition show of the season.] Oh. Well, leave your comments anyway!

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

American Idol Season 6 - Winner

Daughter of former Dallas Cowboys left cornerback Phillippi Sparks, 18-year old Jordin Sparks is the youngest female to make it to the Top 24 in American Idol, season 6. A native of Glendale, Arizona and the winner of “Arizona Idol,” she auditioned for the reality show in Seattle and pleasantly surprised the judges with her powerful singing voice. She had an early start in singing, already showing her talent at the very young age of 18 months. Another talent that Jordin has boasted of is her ability to speak with different accents. Aside from making it to the Top 24, Jordin is also proud to have been deemed the “Overall Spotlight Winner” in 2004 by the GMA Academy.

Although Jordin's talent for singing is apparent, she struggles when it comes to studying math. Jordin Sparks was declared winner of the sixth season of American Idol with her rendition of “Fighter” (Christina Aguilera) and “A Broken Wing” (Martina McBride). In addition to being the youngest winner in American Idol history, she also conquered the contest without ever being in the bottom 2 or 3, joining Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Hicks.

Life after American Idol proved to be very fruitful for Jordin Sparks as lingered in the limelight, making several appearances on television shows like The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, The Today Show, Live with Regis and Kelly, The Early Show and The View. Along with television and radio invites, she graced the covers of Entertainment Weekly and World, and was featured in VIBE, TV Guide, Glamour and other publications.

At present, Sparks continues to perform on tours and concerts to promote her self-titled extended play album, which is a compilation of her most downloaded songs, including "I (Who Have Nothing),” "Wishing On A Star," "To Love Somebody," "A Broken Wing," and "This Is My Now," which was the winning song of the first American Idol Songwriting contest.

American Idol Finals performances:

Week 1: Diana Ross - "If We Hold On Together"
Week 2: British Invasion - "I (Who Have Nothing)" (Shirley Bassey/Tom Jones)
Week 3: Gwen Stefani - "Hey Baby" (No Doubt)
